For 80 years friends, families and visitors to our community have been gathering at 22 Pleasant Street in Chester to experience art and culture; to laugh, sing and reflect. In 1938 the attraction was to enjoy films at what was then the Kenerick. Starting in 1963 the Chester Jesters produced annual summer theatre productions. The Leading Wind Theatre presented puppet shows beginning in 1975. Then after a dormant period, the Chester Theatre Council brought the Playhouse to life again with its first summer festival in 1987. Community support and leadership have since kept this jewel alive and thriving as an important arts venue on the south shore.
This is worth celebrating!
Through the continued support of ticket patrons, donors, sponsors, advertisers, volunteers and government funders our 2019 Summer Festival builds upon the rich history of the Playhouse. The finest musicians and actors from our region and beyond will gather here over the coming months to entertain and engage our audiences. And of course the over the coming months to entertain and engage our audiences. And of course, the Summer Theatre School will showcase emerging talent!
Welcome to the Playhouse!
